MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK – NEW YORK

A montage of the New York Fashion Week shows and behind-the-scenes moments I’ve shot for various producers and publications.

Working as a camera operator and additional DP for a Jeremy Scott documentary project, shooting the runways at Lincoln Center and locations across the city for New York and LA-based production companies, and hired by a west coast luxury lifestyle show to do ENG/red carpet style coverage during their whirlwind itinerary of nearly twenty shows and just as many designer interviews– the flow of a NYFW feels like second nature to me.

Being organized and mobile, and knowing when to be at the right place at the right time, is key if on assignment at NYFW – especially if working with a smaller publication who may not have arranged the right kind of access, the right logistical plan, or even have resources for a proper team.

An editorial brief or shot list might have you capturing moments backstage with a star HMU team and models before the show, while at the same time catching soundbites with a celebrity arriving in the front row, all while you’re supposed to be locking in a position with your tripod and riser in the photo pit, among the sea of photographers, camera operators and vloggers jostling for the best spot to shoot the show.

NYFW is unlike any other kind of event.  It’s a trade show, a high-stakes product launch, it’s theater, it’s facade, it’s art and desire and performative social posturing, it’s the culmination of a season of a designer’s mad or elegantly calibrated vision, and the tornado of labor that it pulls in, bringing together almost every kind of economic character imaginable – all for a few minutes of people walking in clothes, and others looking at them, and then talking about it after.  It’s an absurd and profound carnival of capital and culture, and it’s fun to document!
